Treatment

I am a psycho-dynamic therapist which means that I can help you identify problematic patterns in your emotions and behaviors which are causing you difficulties. The more that you are aware of these patterns, the more you will be free to choose new thoughts, emotions and behaviors.

In the process of therapy, you will have a growing awareness of behaviors and beliefs that are hurting you instead of helping you. Coping mechanisms that were necessary for your survival in childhood may be harming you as an adult. Effective psychotherapy is all about having more choices.

I use a combination of body based mindfulness, psychodrama and parts work. body based mindfulness is a practice that reveals how your body holds your beliefs and experiences about the world. Psychodrama is a technique of reenacting stories in your life instead of talking about them. Parts work is understanding the different components of personality and how the parts function together.

As your therapist, my values are to treat you with compassion and respect and taking the work at your pace. In the spirit of body based mindfulness, I might invite you to notice not just what we are talking about but what it's like in this moment to have the conversation that we're having. I will invite you to notice what sensations you notice in your body and what it’s like to be you in this present moment.

As you tell me about a conversation that you had that day, I might invite you to role play having the conversation with me and focus on how you felt as you enacted each role. We might explore if the way you feel in the conversation is familiar or similar to a relationship that you've had in the past. You might describe an inner conflict that you’re struggling with and this can be an opportunity to experiment with externalizing the inner conflict through a role play conversation as well.

The most often used body based mindfulness practice begins with an invitation to close your eyes and become aware of the body sensation that is most noticeable to you at that moment. Focusing on the sensation can make you aware of the emotion experienced in the sensation. (Without going too deeply into the full technique), this sensation/feelings exploration can be a very effective tool to heal developmental trauma (trauma related to childhood and family of origin experiences).

The practice of body based mindfulness is based on the truth that emotions are experienced in sensations in the body and that the more body awareness that we have, the better we can take care of ourselves by being mindful of our needs and true feelings.

These methods of therapy: body based mindfulness, psychodrama and parts work have been shown to be effective in healing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief as well as helpful in helping people learn coping skills to manage mood instability through body awareness and practicing healthy relationships with themselves and others.

I have ten years experience as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I have been trained in treating trauma and other mental health conditions using these expressive techniques including body based mindfulness, psychodrama and parts work. I also attend ongoing supervision with my colleagues to continue my learning process.
